Join us and become part of a dynamic dance community where every step is a celebration!
Dancing salsa in New Jersey throughout high school and college, I witnessed the transformative power of dance on myself and those around me. Dance classes became an environment for growth and development on personal, physical, and emotional levels. This magic is the essence of South Street Salsa. Our mission is to create a nurturing environment where we inspire every student to reach their fullest potential, not just in dance but in life.
South Street Salsa was founded in 2009 on South Street in Freehold, New Jersey, with the goal of creating unity through dance. The founder, Kevin Toft, trained at HotSalsaHot in Princeton, NJ, with World Salsa Champion Henri Velandia, and in Philadelphia with World Salsa Champion Eli Torres. It was during this time that Kevin discovered dance as a form of self-expression and realized his passion for teaching.
As a dance instructor since 2009, Kevin has taught his students how to access this outlet of expression. His unique dance style incorporates elements of ballet, ballroom techniques, and Afro-Cuban and Brazilian body movement. Over the years, Kevin has expanded his expertise by training in ballet, modern dance, and Brazilian zouk, and studying under salsa world champion Eli Torres. His commitment to his students’ growth has been a constant in his teaching approach, ensuring that each student feels supported and motivated.
Kevin’s passion for community building led him to start teaching in Monmouth and Middlesex counties, aiming to create a vibrant dance community closer to home. He is known for making learning quick and easy, helping dancers of all experience levels evolve and discover their latent talents.
“In my classes, I see people overcoming obstacles and building confidence in themselves. Doing that in a group builds great friendships, and I want to provide that experience for everyone. My job isn’t just about showing you moves and combinations; it’s about helping you understand how these moves fit together and build off one another. Like mixing paint to create new colors, I’m showing you how to create your own art. As a teacher, my goal is to reveal the artist within each of my students.”
Kevin has also studied Brazilian Zouk with Ry’el, the founder of Zen Zouk, and is certified to teach Level 4 Zouk. Additionally, he has studied Bachata with world-class teachers in the Bachata style Essencia. As the owner and director of South Street Salsa, Kevin has fostered a healthy, safe, and supportive environment for his students to learn, perform, and make great memories.

I came across the studio a few months ago by chance and oh my god what a wonderful journey it’s been so far!! Both Kevin and Shannon are some of the most down to earth and talented individuals I know and I feel so lucky to be able to learn under them. They foster such a great community and bring such vibrant energy! Incredibly warm and inviting from the first minute, and while I went for salsa, I've ended up staying for both batchata and zouk courses. The instruction is constructive and kind no matter what level or course I have attempted. If you're looking for a place that encourages you to stretch your capabilities while having fun, this is it. Kevin is an awesome teacher and tailors his lessons to the appropriate level, which means that there's plenty to learn whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced dancer. With a membership, you also get access to weekly practice sessions and monthly socials. The studio has a friendly and inviting atmosphere, and Kevin is very open to hearing feedback about how the studio can improve. There is a great community of people that extends beyond the class and into the Discord app, where you can review dance combination videos from previous classes, ask for recommendations about anything, network for career opportunities, or plan to meet up with others for social events. So if you're looking to take dance classes where you can learn, have fun, and be part of a great community, then check out South Street Salsa! Super sweet and ready to answer all of your questions. Honestly, the classes are really comfortable and you can get started in just socks and even if you have two left feet, they make it super easy. There's zero judgement and everyone feels super supportive of one anothers wins. The environment is really nice and whether you want to twirl the night away at a social or have a cute date night with someone you love, it's a great time for sure. I've been attending South Street Salsa for a while now, and I can honestly say it’s more than just a dance studio—it’s a community. They teach salsa, bachata, and zouk with a perfect balance of technique, fun, and connection. The owner and main teacher is not only incredibly knowledgeable but also genuinely kind and invested in his students (or as he calls us, his "kids"). He creates an environment where everyone feels welcome, supported, and encouraged to grow. Beyond the classes, we go on school trips to socials, host events, and truly look out for one another. It’s a place where you don’t just learn to dance—you become part of something meaningful. My progress has been amazing, and I’m so grateful to be part of this wonderful community. If you're looking for a place to dance, connect, and grow, I highly recommend South Street Salsa! 💃🏻🩵💙❤️ Judita Tothova2025-01-26Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
